  • Scientific research that does not have any practical use should not be funded by the government. To what extent do you agree or disagree?(Task 2 writing):
  • Four London airports and passengers' purposes of travel in 2016(Task 1 chart writing):

  • 固定表达应为 in the long term。
  • 图表描述要客观,common/significant 更合适。

Scientific research and government funding(Task 2 body-plan and sample paragraphs);Four London airports pie charts(Task 1 overview and body sample)
While I can see that it is unnecessary to publicly fund some truly useless scientific exploration, it would be an exaggeration to claim that all research without immediate practical use deserves no government support.;Government funds are limited and come from taxpayers, so they should normally be prioritized for projects with immediate or tangible benefits to the public. Some seemingly useless research may have little connection with citizens' daily lives in the short term, so it may not always be justifiable for the government to spend taxpayers' money on it.

Public funding seemingly useless scientific exploration is necessary

老师示范 / 修改方向:while I can see that it is unnecessary to publicly fund useless scientific exploration...

;长主语可以改成 it is + adjective + to do,使表达更清楚。

学生原始输出:it is indisputable that scientific research that does not have any practical use still should be funded by the government

学生原始输出:funds controlled by governments are limited. so the fans should be prioritized for some zones with direct benefits to the public

Government funds are limited and come from taxpayers. Therefore, they should be prioritized for projects with immediate or tangible benefits to the public. However, some seemingly useless research may not bring such benefits in the short term.

学生原始输出:some minority academic research could get enough money from some interested private institutions

I'm not saying that such projects do not deserve any funding. But the fact is that such projects can sometimes be funded by entities other than the government.

老师举了 genetic modification(基因改造)、target drugs(靶向药)、数学和素数应用于编码技术等例子。

老师处理:老师纠正了 student 对 long term later 的表达,并讲解 in the short term 和 in the long term 的搭配;同时帮助学生把“现在没用、以后有用”的思路写得更准确。

学生原始输出:some research seems to have no practical use nowadays but it may be used long term later

Some research may seem impractical in the short term, but it may be of use in the long term.

复习抓手:短期内可说 in the short term。;长期来看可说 in the long term。;be of use 表示“有用”。

学生原始输出:most companies need to focus on short term profits so investing fans in not practical or impractical researchers are of high risk

Private funding may not be sustainable enough to support research with a long temporal lag. A stable government, by contrast, can continue funding important research for decades.

If the research is truly useless, the government does not have to fund it. However, if it only seems useless at present, public funding can still be justified.

Overall businesses was the most dominant

Overall, business was the dominant purpose of travel for passengers at all airports except Gatwick Airport, where the predominant purpose was to visit friends or relatives.

;where 可以替代 at Gatwick Airport,避免重复。

9

学生原始输出:by contrast others was the least

老师处理:老师指出学生先写 Gatwick Airport 与总览顺序不一致,并纠正 primary purpose、with a percentage standing at、around a half、respectively 等表达。

学生原始输出:specifically when it comes to Gatwick airport

Regarding the other three airports, business was the primary purpose, with the percentages standing at ..., around a half.

;with the percentage standing at...

老师处理:老师解释 around、nearly、more than 的区别,并纠正 favorite/purpose 的搭配问题。

学生原始输出:another very favored purpose

Another common purpose of travel was visiting friends or relatives. / Another significant purpose was family visits.

;more than half 表示超过一半。;common 比 popular/favorite 更适合客观数据描述。;family visits 可以替换 visiting friends or relatives。

12

Public funding seemingly useless scientific exploration is necessary

it is indisputable that scientific research that does not have any practical use still should be funded by the government

funds controlled by governments are limited. so the fans should be prioritized for some zones with direct benefits to the public

Overall businesses was the most dominant

specifically when it comes to Gatwick airport

another very favored purpose

Scientific research and government funding

While I can see that it is unnecessary to publicly fund some truly useless scientific exploration, it would be an exaggeration to claim that all research without immediate practical use deserves no government support.

On the one hand, government funds are limited and they come from taxpayers. Therefore, public money should normally be prioritized for projects that can bring immediate benefits or tangible benefits to the public. Some research projects may not have any clear connection with citizens' daily lives in the short term. For example, research into distant planets may be unlikely to improve ordinary people's lives immediately. In this case, it may not be fully justifiable for the government to spend a large amount of taxpayers' money on such projects.

Moreover, this does not mean that such projects deserve no funding at all. Some of them may be supported by private institutions or individuals who are personally interested in the research. For instance, research into fatal diseases in dogs may attract support from dog owners who are willing to save their pets' lives. In this process, the government does not necessarily have to provide financial support; it can instead help by pushing through relevant legislation or approval procedures.

On the other hand, some research only seems impractical in the short term, but it may be of great use in the long term. Research into genetic modification, for example, may once have seemed impractical, but long-term scientific endeavors have contributed to the development of target drugs today. Similarly, some mathematical research may not bring direct profits at first, but it can later become the foundation of technology in engineering, computer science or encryption.

Another reason for government funding is that private support may not be sustainable enough. Some research has a long temporal lag: the money invested today may not produce useful results until many years or even generations later. Individual donors or private organizations may lose interest, run out of money, or fail to continue the project for a sufficient length of time. A stable government, by contrast, can continue to support valuable long-term research.

Four London airports pie charts

Overall, business was the dominant purpose of travel for passengers at all airports except Gatwick Airport, where the predominant purpose was to visit friends or relatives.

Regarding the other three airports, business was the primary purpose, with the percentages standing at around a half. Another common purpose of travel was visiting friends or relatives, while holidays ranked third. The figures should be presented in a clear order, and respectively can be used when several airports and several percentages are matched one by one.

By contrast, at Gatwick Airport, visiting friends or relatives was the most common purpose of travel, while business followed behind. In this type of static pie chart, others does not usually need to be emphasized in the overview because it is often only used to complete the total percentage.

Public funding seemingly useless scientific exploration is necessary
long term later固定表达应为 in the long term。
Overall businesses was...
another very favored purpose图表描述要客观,common/significant 更合适。

While I can see that it is unnecessary to publicly fund some truly useless scientific exploration, it would be an exaggeration to claim that all research without immediate practical use deserves no government support.

Government funds are limited and come from taxpayers, so they should normally be prioritized for projects with immediate or tangible benefits to the public. Some seemingly useless research may have little connection with citizens' daily lives in the short term, so it may not always be justifiable for the government to spend taxpayers' money on it.

However, some research only seems impractical at present. In the long term, it may become the foundation of important technology, medicine or engineering. Private funding may also be too unstable to support research with a long temporal lag. For this reason, government funding can still be justified for research that is not immediately useful but may become valuable in the future.
