IELTS Writing Task 2 advantages/disadvantages review_improved_version_based_on_class_explanation
Some people believe that young adults should be encouraged to do unpaid work for the community and people in need for a period of time. In my view, this practice can bring more benefits than drawbacks, provided that it remains voluntary and well-organised.
The most direct benefit is that people who are in need can receive timely help. For example, some residents may struggle with daily problems such as a lack of food or support, and young volunteers can help address these difficulties. This can also contribute to the harmony and stability of the whole community, because fewer people will be left without support. In addition, young adults themselves can derive a sense of achievement from helping others and develop practical transferable skills, such as communication skills, interpersonal skills and problem-solving skills.
Admittedly, there are some drawbacks. Since the work is unpaid, some young adults may find it difficult to continue for a long time, especially when they have their own studies or work to complete. Also, if the help only lasts for a short period of time, people who receive support may feel disappointed when the volunteers leave. However, these problems can be reduced. Schools or organisations can offer credits or social recognition, so volunteers still receive meaningful rewards even without payment. They can also arrange volunteers in a continuous system, so one group can take over when another group finishes.
Overall, encouraging young adults to do unpaid community work is more beneficial than harmful, as long as it is based on willingness rather than force, and as long as the work is organised in a sustainable way.
