The table illustrates how the population of New York City changed between 1800 and 2000, with data for the whole city, Manhattan and the other four boroughs combined.
Overall, New York City's population soared over the two-century period, along with a noticeable shift in demographic distribution. Manhattan was the main population center at the beginning, but by the end of the period, the demographic center had shifted to the other boroughs.
In 1800, the total population of New York City was small, at only about 79,000. At that point, Manhattan was the most populous area, accounting for around three quarters of the total, while the other districts combined had a much smaller population.
By 1900, the city's population had surged to over 3 million. To be specific, Manhattan's population increased rapidly, but its share of the total began to fall, while the other boroughs also experienced fast growth in population.
By 2000, the whole city had expanded to around 8 million people. Manhattan's population dipped slightly compared with the previous period, whereas the remaining boroughs maintained rapid expansion, making them the dominant part of the city's population by the end of the period.
