Although cycling is environmentally friendly and beneficial to health, it is becoming less common as a main means of transport in some countries. One major reason is that modern cities have expanded so rapidly that many people now live far away from schools, offices and other major functional areas. For them, cycling the whole distance is simply unrealistic. Another reason is that many cities have not created safe and convenient conditions for cyclists: bike lanes are either absent or occupied by cars, secure parking spaces are limited, and some people worry that their bicycles may be stolen. In addition, private cars remain attractive because they are comfortable and efficient, especially during long commutes.
To encourage bicycle use, governments should first make cycling easier and safer. They could build separated bike lanes, provide secure parking facilities, install cameras in parking areas and support reliable bike-sharing systems with affordable monthly passes. Subsidies could also be offered to people who buy bicycles. At the same time, cities may discourage unnecessary private-car use in crowded central areas through congestion pricing or peak-hour restrictions. Finally, public campaigns should not merely repeat that cycling is good; instead, they should give people practical advice on when and where cycling can replace short car trips.

Before the redevelopment, the campus was divided into two main parts by a railway running from north to south, with the academic area on the western side and student accommodation on the eastern side. In the western academic area, there was a business school in the centre, with a music school located to the north, a library to the south, to the south of which was an arts building, and a cluster of trees in between. On the eastern side of the railway, student flats were located at the northern end of a footpath, which provided access from the northern to the southern end of the campus and intersected with Youquan Road.
After the redevelopment, some original features have remained unchanged, while several facilities have been expanded or replaced. The business school has been expanded, and a new computer centre has been added, taking up part of the former open space. The footpath has also been extended westward, improving access between the two sides of the campus.
