• One place I visited where the air was severely polluted is Tangshan, a city in Hebei Province. I went there in December 2019, during the peak of winter. The air quality was terrible, mainly due to a combination of factors. First, stubble burning in nearby agricultural areas — farmers burning off hay after the harvest. Second, heavy vehicle emissions, industrial smoke and construction dust. On top of that, the cold weather created a temperature inversion that trapped all the pollutants close to the ground. I remember checking the air quality index on my phone, and it was above 400, which is extremely severe. Honestly, my experience was quite unpleasant. As soon as I stepped outside, I could smell a sharp, chemical-like odor in the air. I saw a thick layer of yellow smog hanging over the city, and within a few hours my throat felt terrible — it was like breathing through a dirty blanket. Sightseeing was disappointing too, because famous landmarks were barely visible just a few hundred meters away.

The unique thing is that they also have some antiques like old cassette tapes, and they regularly host small poetry workshops. The owner clearly wants to create a cozy, intellectual atmosphere. So far I've noticed three main customer groups: university students looking for a quiet study spot, young professionals on their lunch break, and parents with young children who come for the weekend storytelling sessions. • The new development in my neighborhood is a community park called Together Share. It opened about three months ago on Taiping Avenue, just a five-minute walk from my flat. Before this, that corner was overgrown with weeds and used to be an abandoned landfill. It's not a huge park, but it's cleverly designed. There's a small running track of about 300 meters, a children's playground with rubber flooring, some outdoor gym equipment for adults, and benches with solar-powered lights beside them. They also planted around 20 trees and built a small rain garden to manage stormwater. The change has been remarkable. Before, people would cross the street to avoid that corner, but now every evening you see families walking there, elderly couples sitting on the benches, and kids playing football on the grass field. • The place I plan to visit is Xinjiang, a vast autonomous region in northwest China. Specifically, I want to explore northern Xinjiang, including Kanas Lake near Urumqi, the Flaming Mountains in Turpan, and the ancient city of Kashgar in the south. I'd like to go in late September or early October, which is the perfect season because the forests around Kanas turn golden yellow and light red, and the weather is cool and dry. I'd take a direct flight to Urumqi airport, then rent a car or join a small guided tour to drive along the stunning Duku Highway, which crosses the Tianshan Mountains. For longer distances, like from Urumqi to Kashgar, I'd take a high-speed train or a domestic flight. I would go with two close friends who also love nature and photography. I want to visit for three main reasons. First, the natural beauty — lakes, grasslands, deserts and snow-capped mountains, all in one place. Second, my cultural curiosity about Silk Road history and local minority cultures. Third, I love adventure and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I really want to experience the real, vast China.

• My favorite place to relax is a small corner of my bedroom next to the window. The corner is very simple. I have a comfortable armchair with a soft gray blanket, a small wooden side table, and a floor lamp with warm yellow light. On the windowsill I keep a few potted plants — mostly colorful succulents. The walls are painted warm yellow, which makes the whole space feel cozy and relaxing. From the window I can see a lake in a nearby park, which is the perfect view. During school holidays, I often spend almost the entire day in this corner. Sometimes I just sleep there, but mostly I read novels, write in my journal, or sit quietly and look outside. It's the place where I feel most peaceful and free. The only thing I don't like is that, because I'm a little lazy, the room can sometimes get messy. So I try to tidy it up regularly, clear out unused things and throw away the garbage. If I could change one thing, I'd probably add a small bookshelf next to the armchair so I don't have to get up every time I want a new book.
