Today I want to talk about a city I visited. It is in Shandong Province, and it is called Qingdao. Qingdao is a coastal city, which means it is by the ocean.
I went there last summer holiday with my parents, my sister, and my cousin's family. We stayed there for about a week, and we had a car trip. My dad and my mom took turns driving, and during the trip we listened to music, talked to each other, and sometimes took a nap in the car.
The best part of the trip was spending time on the beach and swimming in the ocean. We spent a whole afternoon there. We set up a tent on the beach, put on our swimming suits, and went into the water. The beach was warm because of the sun, but the water was actually quite cold at first. However, after a few minutes, I got used to it, and it felt very comfortable. The water was crystal clear, and I could even see what was under my feet. We also had a swimming competition in the water, and my dad was the fastest.
Another thing that left an impression on me was the relaxing feeling of the city. The houses in Qingdao were more spread apart. They were not all clustered together like in many big cities, so life there felt more comfortable and less crowded. We also tried some local food. It was delicious, although some of it was a bit salty and spicy for my taste.
Overall, Qingdao gave me a really good impression. If I get the chance, I would love to go back and visit it again.
Describe some kind of food you have on special occasions.
Today I want to talk about zongzi, which is a special food people usually eat during the Dragon Boat Festival in China.
The Dragon Boat Festival usually falls in May or June, around the beginning of summer. It is a day when Chinese people remember a great poet called Qu Yuan. Many people also watch dragon boat races during this festival.
The most special food on this day is zongzi. It is made of sticky rice and wrapped in leaves, so it smells very fresh. Zongzi comes in many different flavors. Some are sweet, and some are salty. Some taste like dessert, while others have meat inside. Personally, I prefer the meat ones, especially pork zongzi.
Usually, people steam zongzi before eating it. If it is freshly made, you can steam it for about twenty minutes, and then it tastes really good. Some people also like cold zongzi. They leave it in the fridge for a few hours, take it out, and dip it in sugar. That can taste refreshing too.
However, you should not eat too much zongzi because sticky rice is hard to digest. I eat zongzi almost every year, but I have never made one myself. If I had the chance, I would love to learn how to make zongzi one day.
Describe a clever way to solve a problem.
Today I want to talk about a clever way to solve a problem. Recently, I came to Beijing to study and prepare for an exam, and I stayed in a hotel. One problem I had was waking up in the morning.
I tried different ways to solve it. I set an alarm clock, and I also asked the hotel front desk to give us a wake-up call in the morning. However, one day they did not call us, so I overslept.
To solve this problem, my roommate and I came up with a creative solution. We each set an alarm on our phone, and then we gave our phone to the other person. The other person would hide the phone somewhere in the hotel room. We also set the two alarms five minutes apart and turned the volume to the max.
This worked well for two reasons. First, the alarm was loud enough for us to hear in the morning. Second, because we did not know where our own phone was, we could not just reach it and shut it off. We had to get out of bed and look for it. While looking for the phone, we naturally woke up.
The next morning, the method worked really well. It was a simple idea, but I think it was quite smart because it solved the problem in a practical way.
Describe a movie you like.
Today I want to talk about Avatar, which is one of the most impressive movies I have watched. It is a science fiction movie.
I like this movie for several reasons. First, the story is interesting, and the plot is easy to follow. More importantly, the visual effects are amazing. What I like best about it is the cinematography. Everything is computer-generated, and the movie shows an entire planet that people have never seen before.
I watched the movie in 3D in the cinema. It felt like I could reach out and touch the things in the movie. Some scenes looked so real that it almost felt like the water could get on my face. The sound was also loud, powerful, and shocking, and the music was very memorable.
Another reason I remember this movie is that my dad likes it very much. He once told me that the first Avatar movie was his all-time favorite movie. In his mind, it was one of the best movies ever. The director, James Cameron, is also very famous. He also made movies like Titanic and Terminator.
There is another Avatar movie coming out, and I can't wait to see it. Overall, I like Avatar because it has a strong story, amazing visual effects, powerful sound, and a very special world.
Describe a person who is good at learning languages.
Today I want to talk about my friend Tom, who is really talented when it comes to learning languages. He can speak very good English, and I think there are many things he does that help him improve.
Let me break it down into four parts: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. To improve his listening, he listens to English a lot. He watches English movies and TV shows, and he also listens to English songs. When he watches these programs, he does not always use Chinese subtitles. Sometimes he does not use subtitles at all, and he just guesses what people in the movie are saying. This helps him train his listening skills.
When it comes to speaking, he is not shy. Since we go to an international school, we have chances to talk to foreign teachers. A lot of students are shy, but Tom starts conversations as often as possible. I think this is a great way to practise because he actually has to say something in English.
For reading, he reads a lot of English textbooks in class. After class, he also reads English novels and English newspapers. Even when he uses social media, he sometimes gets on English social media.
For writing, he writes English essays and keeps a personal journal in English. Sometimes he gives his writing to AI and asks for suggestions to improve it. I think these habits are the reason why his English is strong.
Describe an app, software or website you often use.
Today I want to talk about WeChat, which is the most popular app in China. I think many people cannot really live without it because we depend on it on a daily basis.
The first important use of WeChat is communication. People send each other text messages, voice messages, photos, and videos. We can also make voice calls and video calls. At school, teachers also use WeChat to send homework documents to us, so it is very important.
Another thing I use WeChat for is ordering food and paying for things. I am currently staying in Beijing for about a month, and I often use WeChat mini programs to order food. After that, I can use WeChat to pay for it. Nowadays, many people do not use cash anymore. We just use WeChat as a wallet.
WeChat is also used for entertainment. There are WeChat Moments, where people post interesting pictures, thoughts, or jokes. There are also short video clips, and people can browse through lots of funny videos. In addition, there are WeChat games, so you can play a quick game just to relax.
Overall, WeChat is very useful, but it can also be addictive. If you are not careful, you can spend hours and hours on it. So I think we should use it wisely.
