Some people suggest that young adults should be encouraged to do unpaid work for the community for a period of time. In my view, this practice can bring more benefits than drawbacks, as long as it is based on young people’s willingness rather than force.
The benefits of community work can be seen from different beneficiaries. Considering people who are in need, unpaid community work may help them address practical problems, such as a lack of food, daily support, or basic care. For the wider community, when more residents receive timely help, the whole community may become more harmonious and stable. For young adults themselves, helping others can also allow them to gain a sense of achievement and develop transferable skills, such as communication skills, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving skills.
Admittedly, this practice is not free from problems. Since the work is unpaid, some young people may find it difficult to continue doing it for a long time. Also, if the service only lasts for a short period of time, the people who receive help may feel disappointed when the support suddenly stops. However, these drawbacks can be partly addressed. Schools or communities can give volunteers credits or social recognition, so that their effort is not completely unpaid. In addition, volunteer programs can be arranged continuously, with one group of volunteers taking over from another, so that the support does not simply disappear.
Overall, encouraging young adults to do unpaid community work is more beneficial than harmful if it remains voluntary and is supported by proper arrangements. The key is not to compel students to participate, but to motivate them in a way that makes the work meaningful and sustainable.
