Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted
One place I visited where the air was severely polluted was Tangshan in Hebei Province. I went there in December 2019, during the peak of winter. The air quality was terrible, mainly due to a combination of factors, including heavy vehicle emissions, industrial smoke, construction dust, and the cold weather. The cold weather created a temperature inversion, which trapped the pollutants close to the ground. I remember checking the PM Index on my phone, and it was over 400, which meant the pollution was very serious. Honestly, my experience was quite unpleasant. As soon as I stepped outside, I could smell a sharp, chemical-like smell in the air. I also saw a thick layer of smog hanging over the city. Within a few hours, my throat felt terrible, and it felt like I was breathing through a dirty blanket. Sightseeing was also disappointing, because some famous local places were barely visible from just a few hundred meters away.
Describe a new shop that has recently opened in your city
A new shop I would like to talk about is called Encounter. It is a hybrid cafe and bookstore located near the city center, just across the main road from Tiananmen Square. The area used to be an old residential neighborhood, but it has been renovated. The shop sells special coffee, new and gently used books, and stationery such as notebooks and fountain pens. They also have some antiques, like old tapes, which make the place feel unique. The owner clearly wants to create a cozy and intellectual atmosphere. So far, I have noticed three major customer groups: university students looking for a quiet study spot, young professionals on their lunch break, and parents with children who come for weekend storytelling sessions. It is also surprisingly popular with retirees, because they enjoy the vintage armchairs and the tea selection. I believe the shop will be successful because there is no other cafe-bookstore hybrid in that part of the city. It fills a gap, and the cozy in-person experience seems to be winning people over.
Describe a new development in the area where you live
A new development in my neighborhood is a community park called Shared Together. It opened about three months ago, on Taiping Avenue, just a five-minute walk from my flat. Before the park was built, that corner was an abandoned landfill with overgrown weeds, so most people would cross the street to avoid it. Now the change has been remarkable. The park is not huge, but it is cleverly designed. There is a small running track, a children's playground with rubber flooring, some outdoor gym equipment for adults, benches with LED lights nearby, about twenty new trees, and a small rain garden to manage storm water. Every evening, you can see families walking there, elderly couples sitting on the benches, and children playing football on the grass field. For me, it is a great development because it gives the community a safe, free, and green gathering space. The only downside is that it can get noisy on weekends, but that is a small price to pay. Overall, I think it is a good example of how to transform neglected urban spaces without spending a fortune.
Describe a place you plan to travel to in the future
A place I plan to visit in the future is Xinjiang, a vast autonomous region in northwest China. Specifically, I want to explore northern Xinjiang, including Kanas Lake, and I also want to visit Turpan and the old town of Kashgar. I would like to go in late September or early October, because that is the perfect season to visit. During that time, the forests around Kanas Lake turn golden yellow and light red, and the weather is cool and dry, which is perfect for outdoor activities. I would take a direct flight to Urumqi, and then rent a car or join a small tour group. For longer distances, I might take a high-speed train or a domestic flight. I would go with two close friends who also love nature and photography. We would hike around Kanas Lake, stay in a wooden cabin, drive along the Duku Highway, try local food such as roasted lamb and local style bread, and maybe camp under the stars in the Taklamakan Desert. I want to visit Xinjiang because of its natural beauty, its Silk Road history, and the feeling of adventure. It has lakes, grasslands, deserts, snow-capped mountains, and colorful landscapes all in one place.
Describe your favorite place to relax at home
My favorite place to relax at home is a small corner of my bedroom next to the window. The corner is very simple, but it feels comfortable. I have an armchair with a soft gray blanket, a small wooden side table, and a floor lamp with warm yellow light. On the windowsill, I keep a few potted plants. From the window, I can see a lake in a nearby park, so the view is quite peaceful. During school holidays, I often spend all day in my room, sleeping, reading, or writing novels. The walls are warm yellow, which makes the room feel cozy and relaxing. One thing I do not like is that the room can get messy because I am a little lazy. So I need to tidy it up regularly and throw away unnecessary things. Even so, it is still my favorite place to rest and spend time alone.
